Why we launched QCFR

Quantum communication is entering a new phase. The challenge is no longer only to prove technological progress, but to develop the capabilities required to make quantum communication work under real operational conditions, in critical infrastructure environments and at European scale.

The Quantum Communication Fieldlab Rotterdam is being developed as a capability that supports Europe’s ambitions for digital resilience, strategic autonomy, technological sovereignty and trusted connectivity. It provides a practical environment where quantum communication can be tested, validated and brought closer to trusted use in real-world infrastructure settings.

This launch in June 2026 marked the formal start of that effort in Rotterdam

Operational by Design

The fieldlab is built around real infrastructure and practical application. It is designed to test, validate and assess quantum communication technologies against operational conditions, infrastructure dependencies and implementation challenges.

Focused on Validation & Interoperability

Initial activities focus on quantum-secured communication, including QKD-based environments, to evaluate technical robustness, interoperability, operational feasibility and integration within existing infrastructure and network architectures.

Built for Trusted European Adoption

By combining testing, validation and collaboration in one environment, the fieldlab helps develop the operational knowledge, certification pathways and deployment conditions needed to support broader European uptake of quantum communication solutions and strengthen Europe’s digital resilience and strategic autonomy.

Latest News & Updates
